Well I guess you can call it playin slide. I been hackin at it for a very long time just teaching myself. I just sit and listen to sliders like George Thorogood, Rod Price and Johnny Winter and try to figure out the sound. Sometimes I'll just slide on other tunes just to be a little different. I only play in standard tuning cause that's how I learned the fret board. Sometime I'll drop all the strings down a full step (D-G-C-F-A-D) just to get a little deeper sound, but still play as if it is standard tuning. I can also bend the strings a whole bunch more that way. Over the years I've got a few slides that I use, 2 glass botles, 2 brass, 1 chrome and 1 stainless steel pipe fitting. The main ones I use are the brass and chrome and all 3 are about 1inch long. I play them on my middle finger. I'll try to get a picture on the site. If you look close you can spot the 2 brass ones sittin on my amp with my LPR in the Gibson Guitar thread.

I've had the chrome one since 1983, it's my favorite. But since I'm gettin older my fingers swell more often and it makes it hard to slip it up and down on my finger. I recently got the brass slides and are gettin better with them mainly cause the diameter is bigger. The bottle, ehhh, I can do without them. Got em just to get em but never really liked the tone from em. I'm really lookin for a thick chrome or stainless that fits my finger just right. The machinist at work just might have to do me a "Government Job" if I can't find one I like. Sorry to say I'm a high gain kinda guy, sorta like Nugent meets Skynyrd with a touch of Angus type of sound, just hard to describe. But I have been told I have my own tone and it sounds good. Acording to my son and his band mates that is. I guess if 17 year olds dig it I can't be that bad.

I whitey, i played for years with a chromed slide, but for some reason I've gone to like a glass slide now, i think it was because it sounded (to my ears) better on the resonator, so i got used to glass, i think your right, you'll have to get one made, i find what they sell in the shop's, well the ones around here and a radius of 200 miles, are all the same type, i see ones on the net, but you know you can spend a lot of money trying and buying without trying first and not liking what you've bought I've got one chromed one thats like, you can turn it around on your finger, and then use your fingers like to play normal, then turn it around ,and, you've got the slide back, I'll take a pic so you can see what i mean

You got that right about the slide pickins, slim and none by me too. I'd hate to buy several on line and not like none of em. I did see some nice thick ones on the jim dunlop site, so I'm tryin to find some local, fat chance I do believe.

as the old saying goes sparky ;D practice, practice, practice but seriously that what it is, practice playing single notes, then progress to slide to another note, and so on, try and get a chance to look at some players around, if there are some around, don't be afraid asking people for some help, most people are OK, i could show you better than explain, maybe some one else can explain better??

Hey whitey, i was in the guitar shop the other day, and they'd just got some new slides in (made a frigging change) so i had a go on a few, and guess what?? i found one that i liked, and worked well for me , heres some photo of it it made of ceramic, excellent here's some others i use/used and here's the one i was talking about, that you can turn around on your finger, to be able to play chords with all your fingers, it's OK, but a bit bright for me on some of my guitars, but it sounds OK, on the Custom, and the 335, must be the pick up's in them guitars, (still got the sticker on it )

I saw those moonshine slides online but not in the shops. I would be willin to try a porcelain one, does it sound ok? What I am lookin for and can't find in the shops is a chrome or stainless about the thickness of your glass slide. How's that copper pipe slide do, sound like brass or got its own tone?
Sparky, I got the same results as you when I started slidin. Don't give up, just try something different. It's hard tryin to learn to play with a big clunky chunk on your pinky or ring finger. Do you get the hammer on effect from the slide beatin the fretboard? It will go away the more you slide and get those fingers toned up for the slide. Thats when I tried a shorty on my middle finger and kept it there ever since. I get good control with the slide, nice vibrato, and can still bend my finger to chord. Try it. The slide police won't hunt you down cause it ain't on your pinky. Main thing is don't press down to make the notes, and start out by just doin some vibrato and then just start movin up and down the neck slow.
