I'm a newcomer, but I'll jump start this stalled out thread anyhow.
My all-time Favorite Southern Rock band......and probably favorite Artist PERIOD would be the Charlie Daniels Band. From the debut "Charlie Daniels" album through 1977's "Midnight Wind", they were one of the most talented group of musicians ever assembled. Sure, the albums are spotty, but if you pick out the best songs from that era, it makes for one helluva mix-CD. After "Devil Went Down To Georgia" came out, they went a bit too mainstream for my tastes, but still talented and still rockin' in spots. By the time "Simple Man" came out, I pretty much had lost hope in them as I think Daniels sold out to Country radio. Luckily, by the end of the 90's, the group was rejuvenated with rockin' albums like "Blues Hat" and "Road Dogs" and they were even playing old rockers like "Trudy" and "Saddle Tramp" in concert again. Over all, I can't think of another artist that I've listened to so often for so long with such a repetoire as CDB.
Some honorable mentions:
Lynyrd Skynyrd-Some may argue with me, and I know my favorite Southern Rock band predates them, but, to me, Skynyrd invented Southern Rock. They are all that embodies the genre. They were back in the day and they are now.
Molly Hatchet-Again, some may argue with me, but, while Skynyrd invented Southern Rock, these guys perfected it! Much like Skynyrd, Hatchet embodies the style as much today as back in the 70's.
Blackfoot-Though I, personally, don't consider them Southern Rock, most people do and they are a great band.
The Outlaws-Between the guitar playing and vocal harmonies, they really were one of the most talented bands out there.
Marshall Tucker Band-Toy Caldwell was my biggest guitar influence and Doug Gray probably had the best voice in the genre. Deserve points for being the most unique band of the bunch.
Allman Brothers Band-Like Blackfoot, I don't entirely agree with their inclusion into the Southern Rock fold, but they certainly had their moments. As good as Duane Allman was, Dickie Betts was no slouch and IMO every bit as good a lead player (though no one could match Duane on Slide). They definitely lost something when they dismissed Betts.
Kentucky Headhunters-Always enjoyed them, but recently, they've become on of my favorites. If you still think of them as the band that stormed up the Country charts in 1989, check out the albums "That'll Work", "Songs From The Grass String Ranch", "Soul" and "Big Boss Man" they'l rock your socks off!
Elvin Bishop and Sea Level-Last 2 I'm going to mention. Any album by either one of these artists is sure to get your toes a-tappin'. Great, underrated stuff.

Jessie, welcome. I agree with all of your choices. I love the new ABB sound, Derek on slide just brings tears to my eyes. That new jam they do at the end of "No One Left To Run With Anymore" has inspired me to pick up the guitar again and jam along with the CD. The DTB is growing on me also. I've never heard Kentucky Headhunters, or Sea Level, but I'm sure that I will like them. Oh, I almost forgot. Chris Anderson, specifically "Old Friend", is another one of my favorites. I loved him with the Outlaws. Monster guitar player. ;D
