Gov’t Mule Adds New Bass Player,
also Plans Fall Tour
Swedish-born session player Jorgen Carlsson has been added to Gov’t Mule as the trio’s permanent new bass player. A resident of the U.S. since 1991, Carlsson replaces Andy Hess, who joined the band in 2003, three years after founding bassist Allen Woody passed away.
In a prepared statement, guitarist Warren Haynes praised outgoing bassist Hess while welcoming Carlsson aboard:
“[When Woody died], we were faced with the daunting task of replacing a one-of-a-kind musician, which I’m sure was challenging for Andy, who did a wonderful job and brought his own personality into the music. Jorgen’s style is somewhere between Woody’s and Andy’s. He brings some of Woody’s aggressive spirit back although he is very much his own man.”
This past Tuesday (Sept. 16), Gov’t Mule released a live double DVD titled The Tale of Two Cities. The set is comprised of two complete shows ¯ one filmed on the first date of the fall 2004 Deja Voodoo tour, and the other filmed on the last date of the winter 2006 High and Mighty tour. Both concerts feature Hess on bass, but Haynes sees Carlsson as connecting the past and future of Gov’t Mule.
“Having worked with Jorgen over the last several months,” he said, “we are very excited to explore some new directions while at the same time going back a little closer to our roots.”
Gov't Mule will begin a fall tour on Oct. 30, with a series of New Year’s performances scheduled for late December
