Part 4: The Rest Of The Story
I tired my darnedest (and some of you will probably think it STILL wasn’t enough) to keep my side stories to a minimum, but there are a few things I think are worth telling that may or may not be of interest so here goes.
-I got to meet Dave Hlubek, he was polite, but a little stand off-ish. Maybe it was just me, because Pam got an autograph and a hug out of him!
-I met Phil McCormack again and he actually remembered me from 4 years ago! I talked to their stage manager and he said he doesn’t know how Phil does it, but he seems to remember EVERYONE he’s EVER met!
-Molly Hatchet’s Stage manager was Jimbo Manion who had been playing 3rd guitar for them. I asked what happened, he said he was now their stage manager and still not sure if it was a promotion or demotion.
-With Pam begging for a drum stick from Christoph, he threw one in her direction after the show…….and hit the security guy square in the face near his eye! Pam and Christoph both tended to the guy and Christoph wound up giving him a tee shirt and a few other souvenirs in appologies.
-I met Charlie Hargrette and Greg Walker after the show and told them both much of what I wrote here…..not sure if they understood me and I said everything that I wrote here to them in under 30 seconds!
-I complimented Greg on the energy level of the show , saying that I couldn’t imagine what they were like 25 years ago. He said, “I can! About halfway through the night I started wearing out!”
-Jay Johnson did a great job filling in for Bobby Barth. As I originally thought, he sounded VERY much like Medlocke and even had the eye mannerisms down pat (Those who have seen Medlocke live with either Blackfoot or Skynyrd know what I’m talking about!)
-I told both Charlie and Greg that Greg should sing a song on their next album. Greg was the only backing vocalist for Blackfoot so one could really hear him good. He’s got a fine voice and I think the time is right for him to sing a song or 2. Their next album will be the 1st one not featuring Rick Medlocke on vocals, so if they’re gonna change, might as well change big and have 2 lead vocalists on record. When I told this to Greg he mentioned that he DID sing lead on his NDN album, but was “scared shitless” throughout the whole recording!
-I usually don’t do the autograph thing, but hell, this was BLACKFOOT! I wound up buying a promo pic and getting Charlie, Greg and Christoph to sign it. We waited until about 1:30 and Jay never came around to sign anything…….didn’t matter really, cuz he’s not in the promo pic.
-Dave Hlubek watched most of the Blackfoot show from the side of the stage......didn't see any of the others after the show though.
-To all Molly Hatchet fans: If Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot are playing together in your area, GO! AND, DAMMIT! If Blackfoot plays AFTER HATCHET…….STICK AROUND!
-To all Molly hatchet fans who left the venue before or during Blackfoot’s show: That was the best show you never seen!
-To give you an idea of the energy level exuded from Blackfoot, they were comparable to these other bands I’ve seen:
Iron Maiden
Poison (like ‘em or not, they put on an energetic stage show)
Ted Nugent
Hank Williams Jr And The Bama Band
Garth Brooks (See my Poison comment)
Whitecross
