I got out one of my old Peavey amps that needs some repair work and just hopin time in the atti fixed it, not. Anyway, I put a new battery in my fuzz box and was jammin and it just didn't sound right. Tweaked and turned knobs and still just didn't like the sound. So I swapped to the clean channel just for kicks. I rarely play the clean side, and man what a difference. I got some tones I been tryin to get for years. So I moved everything over to the new Peavey in the clean side and man I just blew my own socks off. I set it to get a Stones "Satisfaction" tone and there it was. Got the fuzz real heavy and maxed out the fuzz's gain and had IN-A-GODDA-DA-VIDA sound goin like I knew what I was doin. So did I just stumble across somethin everybody else has been knowin? Now I usually don't use any effects but just love fuzz. How do you guys plug up your boxes? Now I can have my fuzz just like I want, hit the button and go to the dirty channel for all my gain the way I like. I don't know how amps really work but when I fuzz out the dirty channel the sound just sounds, well not what I want or like. My fuzz box does add a lot of gain so maybe I'm gainin out the pregain too much. Did that make any sense?

It depends on what song I'm playing. I try to re-create the actual sound of the song. For instance, Crazy Train, or Revelation Mother Earth, by Ozzy. I try for that sound Randy Rhodes gets. You know, really noisy distortion, usually with a Zoom 505. I set a patch with distortion and a little chorus, with a clean patch right next to it. And switch with the Zoom.
But when I'm playing an Allman brothers song, or Grateful Dead. I play straight through the amps clean channel, with the gain just a bit on the hot side. Sometimes I use a footswitch, to switch between the amps, clean and dirty channel.

I never really tried to copy the tone of the song, just had to make it sound like I wanted to hear it and still do it that way. I just gotta be different. Now sometimes just by chance I sound like the original artist. I'm gonna have to play around with my fuzz box a little more and see what I can get out of it. I really think the fuzz sound is where it's at, but that's just me. I do try to play clean sometime but , just don't do anything for me.

I've never really tried to get anybody else sound/tone, I've all way's tried for my own sound, I suppose the main reason is that I've never played guitar in a covers band, (I've played bass) so i never tried to get someone else's sound,
I used to use a Vox distortion, and i have also used a Ibanez tube screamer, but nowday's i don't use any effect's pedals, only a wah wah, and maybe a bit of chorus. I find i can get a lot of different tones from my Mesa, from a nice clean to some really dirty sounds, I don't use the clean channel that much though, and if i do, i still put a bit of gain in the mix,
But hat's off to people that do/can get other guitarist sounds, it's an art in it self I'm sure, i think I'm to lazy to try, or too dumb to be able to get their sound,

Not really punk. It's actually harder to sound like an original artist than just yourself, ain't it. I can play a whole bunch of covers but can't really sound like anybody.
PS Aerosmith @ Central Park, Aug 29, 1975 on Wolfgangs Vault is really jammin. Got it spinnin right now, all the great live songs they do that I like.

The best sound I ever got out of my guitar was through my drummers Yamaha PA. Then through two JBL's speakers, Can't remember the model #. But the sound was soooo smooth. (I didn't have my amp with me so the drummer hooked me up) I didn't want to put the guitar down.

Like i said punk, i take my hat off to folk's that can (& do) create the sound of these artist's, Maybe i should play around a bit more with the Zoom 505, You've given/sent me enough patches to try, i like some of them that you sent, It's just that I've always tried to get my own sound, but some times i hit on a sound that sounds just like another artist, especially with the Mesa, it's so easy to get a Santana, Dickey, or Peter green, and some others with this amp, (well they sound similar to me but others might think different ) Yeah, I've heard that your fussy as well punk only kidding you ;D

LOL. I don't use the Zoom much anymore. But it was a cool new toy for me when it first came out. There were quite a few good bands in my area that used it. Including a reggae band that rocked the house. I polled the people in the bar that night, and they all seemed to like the different sounds that it made. Even now i notice some bands still use it. But you can't use it with a tube amp. Too noisy.

Guys I been havin some fun with the fuzz into the clean side. Settin the clean gain about 80% to get the tubes goin, max out the gain on the fuzz, jumpin from light to a heavy fuzz and usin the volume to bring the sound down to a mild roar. I had everything set to my likin with the fuzz on that the speaker sounded like it was cracked. I just dig on that sound. I gotta get the footswitch I see now, cause I still like the dirt from channel 2. I guess a whole bunch of pregain is just in my blood. Don't you guys just love the tubes screamin just from the amp itself with no help from anything but the guitar.
